A native of the Bay Area, John started playing guitar after
hearing a Mahavishnu Orchestra record in high school.
After getting schooled in Oakland by a real jazz guitar teacher from
the New England Conservatory, John fell under the spell of Monk et al.
In the 1990s, he crashed workshops with Jim Hall and Atilla Zoller in
Vermont, and picked Adam Levy's Ted Greene-influenced brain in Albany,
CA before Levy rocketed off with Tracy Chapman and Nora Jones.

Astounding. That's what I think sometimes, when I look in the mirror.
But that's neither here nor there.
I was born in NYC, raised in New Jersey. Mr. Whitman begged me every
year to be in marching band. I played trombone then, but stopped while
taking lessons at the Eastman School, because I had switched to
bass.
Somewhat nauseous on peyote in the mid-1970's, I listened to Charles
Lloyd's Forest Flower album about 30 times in a row, and my
appreciation for jazz was born. I'm new to Monk at any depth, and
that's why I say, "astounding". I have played with Adam Levy in an
obscure blues band, and with other name musicians in other obscure
bands.
I play bass because it is absolutely necessary. It's the best thing I
do.

After completing his studies with Bob, Rick went on to pursue jazz
across two continents, teaching and performing in Boston, Hawaii, and
Japan. While in Japan, Rick appeared at such notable venues as Body
and Soul, Live Inn Pier and Shinjuku Pit Inn. He co-led the Monk
Tribute Band with Natori Toshihiko, and powered the Mineko Ogata Trio
and Hisashi Nakajima Quartet with a traditional and experimental jazz
drumming style. Now a resident of San Francisco, Rick continues his
pursuit of jazz and experimental music with top musicians in the Bay
Area. Current projects include:
